Mustafa Kamal succeeds Muhith as new finance minister

Kamal was elected for the second and third time as MP for the Comilla 10 constituency in 2008 and 2014 respectively

AHM Mustafa Kamal, the outgoing Planning Minister, is set to be the Finance Minister in the new cabinet.

He became involved in politics as a student in the ‘60s.  

He is the convener of the Bangladesh Awami League in the Comilla district (South) and was elected to Parliament from Comilla 9 in 1996 for the first time. He was then elected in three consecutive terms in 2008, 2014 and 2018. 

Kamal was elected for the second and third time as MP for the Comilla 10 constituency in 2008 and 2014 respectively.

He held the post of chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the Finance Ministry from 2009-2013. 

It was during his third term that he served as planning minister.

Kamal completed his graduation in commerce from the University of Dhaka in 1967 and Masters in accounting the following year. He also earned a law degree and passed the chartered accountancy exam in 1970 securing first position in the combined merit list in the then-Pakistan.

He is also known to be a cricket patron, thanks to his stint as chairman of the Abahani Cricket Committee for more than two decades, from 1990-2010. After that he was elected president of the Asian Cricket Council from 2010-2012.

Kamal succeeded Alan Isaac as president of International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2014.

He was born as Abu Hena Mohammed Mustafa Kamal in Laksham, Comilla on June 15, 1947. His father was late Haji Babru Miah and mother Sayara Khatun. 

His wife is Kasmiri Kamal and they have a daughter, Nafisa Kamal, who is a director at Farmers Bank Ltd.
