JS representatives meet BJP VP

A Bangladesh parliamentary team in a meeting with India’s ruling BJP yesterday stressed the need for discussions to solve the yet unresolved bilateral issues quickly.

Led by Col (retd) Faruk Khan, the eight-member lawmakers’ team met BJP Vice-President BS Yeddyurappa at the latter’s office on Ashoka Road in Delhi in the afternoon.

They discussed the issues of common interests and steps needed to improve bilateral ties. They also agreed that the two neighbouring countries should work together to resist international terrorism.

Yeddyurappa hoped that the pending issues could be addressed through dialogues.

Earlier in the day the lawmakers, who went to India on November 22, visited Vivekananda International Foundation and held an hour-long meeting with top officials and its members who include defence officers, politicians, economists among other noted citizens.

Later the visiting team met with Shashi Tharoor, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Border Issues, and joined a lunch.

Around 20 members of the Lok Sabha and other representatives joined the event when the border issues were discussed.

After the meeting with Yeddyurappa, the Bangladesh delegation participated in a discussion with Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha M Thambidurai over tea. They emphasised on the need of regular visit of parliamentarians of both the countries.

Other members of the Bangladesh delegation are Whip Iqbalur Rahim, and lawmakers Kazi Nabil Ahmed, Pankaj Debnath, Mustafa Lutfullah, Naheem Razzak, Mahjabeen Khaled and Shafiqul Islam Shimul. The team also include Mohammad A Arafat and Sujit Nandi.

After their arrival in India, the team met with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the first day and Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Monday.
