A BGB personnel has been killed allegedly by Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) at Naikhongchhari in Bandarban on Wednesday.
Mizanur Rahman, a naik of the Border Guard Bangladesh, went missing when a patrolling team of the 31 BGB battalion was shot at, allegedly by the Myanmar frontier guards, near the border pillar number 52 at Paanchhari in Dochhari union.
“Through a source and interpreter, the BGP is now willing to hand over body of Mizan,” BGB Director General Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune over phone yesterday.
“We want the body along with all his belongings,” the BGB DG said, adding that the BGB personnel were in uniform during the attack and had followed all rules.
Our Bandarban correspondent reported that Mizan was carrying a submachine gun (SMG) and 120 rounds of bullets when he went missing.
“We have set up a number of camps to check the influx of Rohingyas, and our members went there [the scene of the shooting] to check after the camps,” he added.
Claiming that the BGP was dilly-dallying and had not responded to a request for a flag meeting, Maj Gen Aziz said: “We have strongly protested the move of the BGP…We have created pressure from all sides.”
He said security has been beefed up along Myanmar border.
The BGB wanted a better relationship with the Myanmar frontier guards, Aziz said, but added that the troops might not show compassion to their Myanmar counterparts in the future.
Earlier, the Foreign Ministry has summoned Myanmar Ambassador in Dhaka Than MyoMyint and strongly protested the firing and detention of a member of Border Guard Bangladesh.
He was summoned yesterday afternoon and was handed over a note verbal, strongly protesting the firing and detention of a member of Border Guard Bangladesh patrol team by the Myanmar Border Guard Police along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, said a press release of the Foreign Ministry.
Meeting with Secretary (Bilateral) Mustafa Kamal, Bangladesh also demanded immediate release of the captive BGB member, Naik Md Mizanur Rahman.
Mizan has remained missing since Wednesday morning following indiscriminate firing by the Myanmar BGP.
Bangladesh has also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Myanmar has also lodged a strong protest with the Myanmar Foreign Ministry demanding an immediate investigation into the matter and the release of captive BGB member.
The Myanmar ambassador assured that the matter would be duly conveyed to the authorities concerned in Myanmar immediately and that he would correspond back to Bangladesh as soon as he hears from them.
