Why Bangladesh is not joining 19th Saarc summit

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam came up with the observation while talking to journalists at his office Wednesday afternoon. “We have conveyed our decision to Nepal Prime Minister and SAARC secretariat on Tuesday,” he said, adding that the decision was Bangladesh’s own. Meanwhile, the 19th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit, scheduled to be held in Islamabad in November, has been postponed after Bangladesh and India announced inability to take part in it.

India has already communicated its decision to Nepal, the Saarc chair, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said, reports the Kathmandu Post. The summit is automatically postponed or cancelled if one member country skips the event. Tensions between India and Pakistan are growing after militants suspected to have entered from Pakistan stormed an Indian Army base in Uri on September 18, killing 18 soldiers. On Tuesday, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi decided to not to attend the summit. Later Bhutan and Afghanistan also decided not to attend it.
