The influx of Rohingyas from Myanmar might appear as a threat to the country’s security and the demographic map of bordering district Cox’s Bazar since they are becoming more influential.
“The Rohingyas are involved in agriculture, trade, commerce and, most importantly, in criminal offences. Their influx will emerge as a security threat to Bangladeshi communities and our sovereignty,” said Lt Col Zahid Hasan, former BGB commanding officer at Teknaf.
He also said the Rohingyas were gradually becoming influential in Cox’s Bazar by dint of their involvement in different legal and illegal activities and with the patronisation of some locals.
He made the observations at a workshop on the impacts of the Rohingyas’ gradual influx and vulnerability in Bangladesh. Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) organised the event at a city hotel.
Insurgent groups which want to destabilise the country might use the Rohingyas, the former BGB official said.
UNHCR Country Representative Stina Ljungdell said repatriation of Rohingyas must be dealt with Myanmar following international charters.
Prof CR Abrar, RMMRU executive director, said the government must settle the problems in compliance with international laws.
