Six Bangladeshi hotel fire victims repatriated from Kolkata

Seventh victim cremated in Kolkata at family’s request

The bodies of six Bangladeshis killed in a hotel fire in Kolkata on Wednesday have been repatriated to Bangladesh through the Bhomra and Benapole borders.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release on Saturday that the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata coordinated with local authorities and the victims’ families to complete the necessary formalities and facilitate the repatriation.

The body of SM Alimuzzaman of Satkhira was brought back through the Ghojadanga-Bhomra border on Saturday morning and handed over to his family.

The bodies of four members of a Kushtia family — Debashish Dutta, Afsana Sharmin, Shornoshish Dutta and Md Akram Ali — and Babu Ahmed of Aminbazar in Dhaka were repatriated through the Petrapole-Benapole border on Saturday afternoon.

The deputy high commission provided the families with necessary assistance throughout the process, including preservation, transportation and repatriation of the bodies.

The body of the seventh victim, Repti Sarkar of Satkhira, was cremated in Kolkata on Friday night at the family’s request. The deputy high commission also provided financial and other assistance for the cremation.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families of those killed in the fire.
