Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman will pay an official visit to New York from Friday to 29 as part of a series of preparatory engagements ahead of assuming the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Dr Khalilur Rahman was elected president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the 81st session on June 2, defeating Cyprus in what Dhaka described as a "historic and landmark" victory.
He is likely to depart New York for Dhaka on July 30, a senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told UNB, noting that there are some preparatory engagements before the next session.
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 81) will open on September 8, 2026.
The first day of the high-level general debate will be September 22.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to lead the Bangladesh delegation to attend the UNGA's high-level general debate.
Bangladesh said the "landmark" victory (UNGA Presidency) was a strong testament to the confidence and trust that the international community places in Bangladesh, as well as to the country's growing diplomatic stature and constructive engagement within the multilateral system.
Dhaka said this achievement is not only the election of a Bangladeshi candidate to one of the most distinguished positions within the United Nations, but it also constitutes significant international recognition of Bangladesh's longstanding commitment to multilateral diplomacy, international peace and security, sustainable development, and global cooperation.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the organization.
Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.
The Assembly meets in regular sessions from September to December each year and thereafter as required.
It discusses specific issues through dedicated agenda items or sub-items, which lead to the adoption of resolutions.
