US Secretary of State John Kerry is likely to meet BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia during his Dhaka visit Monday, a senior leader has said.
The meeting between Kerry and Khaleda is likely to be held on Monday evening at US Ambassador Marcia Bernicat's residence as the BNP chief is not holding any official protocol, the leader told the Dhaka Tribune seeking anonymity.
During his less than 12-hour stay in Dhaka, Kerry will call on President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to diplomatic sources.
He will meet with government officials to discuss growing cooperation on global issues, according to a US state department press release issued in Washington Wednesday.
“He also will focus on strengthening our long-standing bilateral partnership on democracy, development, security and human rights,” his office said in the statement.
Kerry will also hold a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali before leaving Dhaka for New Delhi the same day.
Ambassador Bernicat on Friday met Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and discussed the overall preparation over Kerry’s visit.
