Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Mauritius Labor Minister Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem discussed the status of Bangladeshi workers in Mauritius, the possible reopening of the country’s labor market and future bilateral cooperation during a meeting in Geneva on Monday.

The meeting took place at 9:30am on Monday at a United Nations office in Geneva on the sidelines of the 114th International Labor Conference in Switzerland.

At the outset, Ariful Haque Chowdhury conveyed greetings to the Mauritian government on behalf of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and urged Mauritius to take an early decision on signing a memorandum of understanding to facilitate the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers.

He highlighted the capabilities of Bangladesh’s skilled workforce, saying the government is ready to send professionals in sectors including textiles, healthcare, engineering and accounting. He also formally invited the Mauritian labor minister to visit Bangladesh.

Welcoming the proposal, Uteem said Mauritius was interested in recruiting skilled workers from Bangladesh, particularly for its textile sector, and is considering sending a draft memorandum of understanding to Dhaka soon.

He also expressed interest in investment opportunities in Bangladesh’s textile industry alongside cooperation in manpower recruitment.
