Dhaka pays tribute to former Algerian president Zéroual

The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka hosted a condolence book signing in memory of former Algerian President Liamine Zéroual, with diplomats and members of civil society paying tribute to his legacy.

Ambassadors, high commissioners, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and representatives of civil society attended the event, expressing sympathy and solidarity with Algeria while honouring Zéroual’s leadership during a pivotal period in the country’s history.

Diplomats, along with Bangladeshi civil society and religious leaders, praised his commitment to peace, stability, and international cooperation. Participants also highlighted the longstanding and friendly relations between Algeria and Bangladesh.

Liamine Zéroual was born on July 3, 1941, in Batna, Algeria. He joined the Algerian army at the age of 16 and rose through the ranks to command key military regions. He later served as Algeria’s ambassador to Romania, gaining diplomatic experience, and was appointed chief of land forces in 1989, marking a significant milestone in his career.
