Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has sought full support from the Commonwealth for the upcoming national elections scheduled in the first half of February.
He made the request during a meeting with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday.
Professor Yunus said that alongside Bangladesh’s democratic transition, assistance is needed to ensure free, fair, credible and festive elections.
He thanked the secretary-general for taking a keen interest in the country’s election process.
In response, Shirley assured the chief adviser of the Commonwealth’s full support for Bangladesh’s elections and post-election transition.
She highlighted that the Commonwealth, comprising 56 countries including G7 and G20 members, has ample resources to support Bangladesh.
The secretary-general added that she had met with various stakeholders, including the chief justice, law adviser, foreign affairs adviser and the chief election commissioner.
She also confirmed that several observation teams from the Commonwealth are being prepared to monitor the elections.
The two leaders also discussed youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, the expansion of social businesses, and advancing the Triple Zero vision to reduce unemployment, carbon emissions, and inequality.
