Survey: Northeast India favours sending Hasina back to Bangladesh

The northeastern states, which share a long border with Bangladesh, have shown a stronger inclination toward sending Hasina back compared to the rest of India

A significant majority of people in Northeast India want former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina to be sent back to Bangladesh, according to a recent India Today NE survey.

The survey, conducted under the "Mood of the Nation" series, reveals that 55% of respondents from the northeastern region support her extradition to Bangladesh.

The northeastern states, which share a long border with Bangladesh, have shown a stronger inclination toward sending Hasina back compared to the rest of India.

Additionally, 16% of respondents in the eight northeastern states believe she should be relocated to a third country. This may protect the pro-Indian Bangladeshi politician from legal actions in Bangladesh while maintaining warm diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Dhaka.

Meanwhile, 23% of respondents in the region believe India should continue to shelter Hasina, considering her long-standing alliance with the country. Nationally, 37.6% of all respondents in the survey echoed this sentiment.

Hasina has been in India since August 5, after fleeing Bangladesh during protests led by students. She currently faces over 100 cases in Bangladesh, including charges of murder, mass killings, and crimes against humanity linked to the July uprising.

The Bangladesh government formally requested India on December 23 to facilitate her return, but New Delhi has yet to respond.
