Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Sunday said every coastal nation in the Indian Ocean region should ensure that their growth and prosperity are based on mutual trust, respect, and shared interests.
"This will enable all coastal nations to cooperate and support each other in collective development," Touhid said during a plenary session at the Eighth Indian Ocean Conference in Oman.
As a maritime nation, Bangladesh has long been a significant hub for marine activities, the adviser said.
The country actively participates in various regional platforms, including the Indian Ocean Rim Association and the International Seabed Authority, he noted. "We are committed to strengthening our partnerships across the Indian Ocean, addressing emerging challenges, and seizing opportunities in the region."
He added that maritime security threats such as piracy, armed robbery, human trafficking, illegal arms trade, and unregulated fishing must be addressed with appropriate measures. "Additionally, regulatory and administrative issues need to be resolved."
Touhid emphasized that vulnerabilities in major maritime routes pose risks to the global economy, food security, and energy supply.
Given these challenges, along with other geo-economic and geopolitical factors, enhanced cooperation among nations is essential, he said. "We must take action to counter vulnerabilities and build resilience."
He also stressed the need to strengthen the maritime supply chain and overcome obstacles to facilitate global trade, reduce costs, and ensure the smooth flow of goods worldwide.
Furthermore, the adviser highlighted that a comprehensive approach combining technology, infrastructural development, strategic planning, risk management strategies, and cross-border cooperation is necessary to reinforce the maritime supply chain.
"We need to facilitate maritime connectivity and reduce trade barriers. The liberalization of visa policies should also be considered, particularly to ease visa and administrative processes for our seafarers, ensuring their well-being, as they play a crucial role in maintaining the maritime supply chain," he said.
