Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma has said that poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's works are "a shared cultural heritage" of India and Bangladesh.

He said the poet's works "give us a unique platform to forge closer people-to-people and cultural connection between the two countries."

He was speaking at a musical evening of Bangladesh's national poet Shyama Sangeet at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Center (IGCC), Gulshan.

Kazi Nazrul is equally popular in India and Bangladesh.

Nazrul has composed more than a hundred devotional songs on Goddess Maa Kali, which is called Shyama Sangeet.

Renowned artists Tito Munshi, Mridula Samadder and Bijon Chandra Mistry performed selected works of Nazrul's Shyama Sangeet at the event.

Prominent persons from the field of art and culture in Bangladesh joined the program, the Indian High Commission said.
