The UAE government has pardoned 57 Bangladeshis sentenced for protesting in solidarity with the anti-discrimination student movement, with 14 of them returning to the country on Saturday evening.
This information was announced in a statement from the press wing of the chief adviser's office on Saturday afternoon.
The statement said that of the 57 pardoned Bangladeshis, 14 will arrive in Bangladesh at 7pm.
The flight carrying the Bangladeshis will first land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7pm and will later proceed to Chittagong's Shah Amanat International Airport at 10pm.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam informed the media that on August 28, the chief adviser had a phone conversation with the president of the UAE, during which a large part of the discussion was about pardoning the 57 sentenced individuals.
The chief advisor had requested the president to pardon the expatriate workers, and the president fulfilled his request.
It is worth mentioning that in July, 57 Bangladeshis were sentenced to various prison terms by UAE courts for staging protests in support of the quota reform movement in Bangladesh.
Among them, three were sentenced to life imprisonment, 53 were given 10-year sentences, and one was sentenced to 11 years.
