  • 264 BGP members taken shelter in Bangladesh till now
Update : 06 Feb 2024, 04:15 PM

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday said that the spillover effect of Myanmar's internal conflicts was unexpected and unacceptable.

"We summoned the Myanmar ambassador to lodge our strong protest and asked him to convey that to his government," he said, while replying to a question from the journalists at the foreign ministry.

"It's their internal conflict. But we have protested that because of the conflicts mortal shells are falling into our border, killing our people... their (Myanmar) people are also taking shelter to our country," he said.

Earlier, Director General of the Myanmar wing of the foreign ministry, Mia Mohammad Mainul Kabir, summoned Myanmar Ambassador U Aung Kyaw Moe to protest the ongoing conflicts along the Bangladesh border.

This followed Monday's incident in which two people – a Bangladeshi woman and a Rohingya man – were killed as mortar shells fell on the Bangladesh side of the border in Tumbru.

Besides, several other Bangladeshis were injured by mortar shells or bullets as the Myanmar Army and rebel group Arakan Army fought battles on the Arakan.

As per the latest developments, a total of 264 Border Guard Police (BGP) members of Myanmar have taken shelter in Bangladesh since last Saturday.

Asked about the discussion on the return of the BGP members, Hasan Mahmud said the Myanmar authorities have proposed that they want to take them back through the waterway.

The discussion, however, is still ongoing, he added.

The foreign minister said when they were in talks with Myanmar on Rohingya repatriation, such types of incidents were undesirable.

Replying to a question, he said the government was giving shelter to BGP members, not any other groups. Some of the civilians, who also crossed the border, are BGP men's family members.

He also criticized BNP's comment on unprotected borders as incoherent speech.

Hasan Mahmud, who is going to India tonight for his first bilateral meeting on Wednesday, said he will meet Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, Commerce Minister Piush Goyal and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

"We earlier sought the support of India for Rohingya repatriation. We will also discuss the Myanmar security situation as both our countries have borders with Myanmar," he said.
