Bangladesh Ambassador to US Imran returns to work

  • His leave last month drew curiosity
  • Foreign secretary brush aside leave-related speculations
Update : 14 Dec 2023, 10:05 PM

Bangladesh Ambassador to United States Muhammad Imran has returned to work in Washington after his leave.

His "routine" leave last month drew curiosity as a Bangla daily, Manabzamin, reported that Ambassador Imran went on leave for an indefinite period.

The newspaper also raised questions about his leave and his whereabouts, as it coincided with the leave of the US ambassador in Dhaka Peter Haas.

The US ambassador was active in political mediation between major parties ahead of the general election.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, however, told reporters that Ambassador Imran was on a sanctioned leave.

"After two years, we are entitled to take a leave. He is entitled to take one month's leave. But he took less than a month's leave," he had said.

The foreign secretary also brushed aside any speculations and said ambassadors can take leave for many reasons from medical emergencies to personal home leave.

After returning to work, Ambassador Imran sent a message to his colleagues at the foreign ministry on Thursday that he had resumed his office.
