The United States wants what the Bangladeshi people want for themselves: a free and fair election conducted in a peaceful manner, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller has said.
Replying to a question at the daily briefing in Washington on Wednesday, he said: "So again, as I said yesterday and as I said the day before and have said a number of times, the holding of free and fair elections is the responsibility of everyone: all political parties, voters, the government, security forces, civil society."
The issue of an October 28 press briefing of the BNP at the party headquarters in Naya Paltan, Dhaka, when the opposition brought an American citizen to their office named Mian Arefi, a self-proclaimed advisor to President Joe Biden, also came up at the question and answer session.
The spokesperson repeated what the US embassy in Dhaka had earlier said – that he did not represent the United States government.
