A high-ranking delegation from the Bangladesh Navy has reached Yangon, Myanmar, for a three-day meeting with their Myanmar counterparts.
The meeting is set to take place from Thursday to Sunday, reads a press release. The delegation led by Commodore Mustaque Ahmed includes Captain Ahamed Amin Abdullah, Commander Mohammad Arifur Rahman and Lieutenant Commander Hasan.
The visit is expected to potentially foster bilateral naval cooperation and discuss matters of mutual interest.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate Director Lt Colonel Abu Hayder Mohammad Rasheluzzaman told Dhaka Tribune the Bangladesh Navy delegation is visiting Myanmar for navy-to-navy biannual talks.
Meanwhile, Yadanar Maung, a spokesperson for Justice For Myanmar, which campaigns for justice and accountability for the people of Myanmar, said: “The Myanmar Navy is responsible for the commission of genocide against Rohingyas and is part of an illegal and illegitimate military junta that is now waging a campaign of terror against the people of Myanmar.
“By sending a high-level delegation to Myanmar for naval talks, Bangladesh is legitimizing the junta and emboldening its crimes.
"We urge Bangladesh to suspend military engagement and support the Myanmar people’s struggle for human rights and democracy."
