Bangladesh is sending ships directly from the Chittagong port to Liverpool, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam has said.
He termed it a “silent revolution” as the development did not get media attention.
"It's a big development. Now we can send ships in 18-19 days while it used to take 29 days before. We have increased the draft of the port by two metres. You will see further improvements when the Patenga and Bay lines would be launched," he said.
The state minister was replying to a question at the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh's (DCAB) flagship event “DCAB Talk” at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
DCAB President Rezaul Karim Lotus and General Secretary Imrul Kayes conducted the program.
The deep sea port is a political issue in Bangladesh with many countries showing interest to build it.
Hence, Chittagong used to use feeder vessels to transport goods from the big mother vessels elsewhere in the deep sea.
The state minister said with the two-metre increase in the depth of the draft, they are getting positive outcomes.
"We can respond quickly. Cost of transportation also reduced with time," he said.
