Update : 27 Feb 2023, 10:38 AM

Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship Santiago Cafiero has arrived in Dhaka on a three-day visit.

He was greeted by his Bangladeshi counterpart Dr Ak Abdul Momen at the at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 8am on Monday.

This is the first visit by an Argentine foreign minister to Bangladesh.

The Argentine foreign minister will open the Argentine Embassy in Dhaka on Monday -- a sign of deepening bilateral relationship with Bangladesh.

During Santiago Cafiero's visit, there is a possibility of signing agreements with Bangladesh on three issues, including cooperation in the agricultural sector.

On December 10, 2022, Santiago Cafiero said Argentina would push the reopening project of the embassy in Bangladesh, closed since 1978.

The decision to reopen the embassy was most likely boosted by the massive Bangladeshi support for Lionel Messi's team in the Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

After Argentina won the World Cup in December, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent a congratulatory letter to the South American country's president, Alberto Fernandez.

In response, President Alberto wrote back, thanking the Bangladesh prime minister.

Alberto said he believed that the people of the two countries would be bound by the bond of brotherhood and harmony by establishing an embassy of Argentina in Dhaka in 2023.
