As February 24 would mark one year since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the UN General Assembly is going to adopt a resolution against Russia.
The United States (US) has sought Bangladesh's support in that resolution.
According to several sources, the matter was discussed during the visit of Derek Chollet, the counselor of the US Department of State, to Dhaka on Wednesday.
In this regard, an official said that apart from seeking support for the resolution, the US also requested Bangladesh to urge Russia to stop the war during any discussion with them.
However, they said no commitment was given to the US delegation regarding the position of Bangladesh in the resolution.
“Our general position is that we refrain from voting on any country-based resolution. However, out of the five resolutions adopted in the UN General Assembly on the Ukraine war, Bangladesh voted in favour of two and refrained from voting in the remaining three,” they added.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Seheli Sabrin held a media briefing on Thursday and said that in various meetings with Derek Chollet, Bangladesh requested a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine crisis and immediate expansion of assistance programs, and Bangladesh reiterated its strong position in favour of ending the war.
“Bangladesh also called on the United States to take effective measures to resolve the food and energy crisis caused globally due to reciprocal trade sanctions,” she said.
“The US delegation applauded the positive changes in the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) activities and emphasized sustainable reforms,” she added.
