BGB on high alert amid tensions near Myanmar border

BGB, BGP to hold flag meeting soon

Update : 10 Oct 2022, 05:04 PM

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is on high alert amid the tensions near the Myanmar border, said BGB Director General Sakil Ahmed.

In order to prevent smuggling and illegal entry through the border, the BGB has maintained strict surveillance, he said at a press briefing after visiting the border area of Naikhongchhari of Bandarban on Monday.

For the past two months, gunfire has raged across the border in Myanmar between the Myanmar Army and Arakan Army (AA). Mortar shells and bullets were shot into Naikhongchhari before, killing and injuring many people, the BGB chief said.

These incidents have caused the residents to live in fear, he added.

He said the tense situation along the Myanmar border is the country’s internal issue. “However, the BGB has kept regular contact with Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP),” he noted.

“A flag meeting will soon be held,” BGB Director General Sakil Ahmed said.

The official also said that the recent landmine explosion near the border was informed to the Myanmar authorities. He also urged Bangladeshis living near the border areas to remain cautious of the situation.

Last month, a 17-year-old-Rohingya boy named Mohammad Iqbal was killed and five others were injured when a mortar shell fired by the Myanmar army exploded at the Zero Point Rohingya Camp close to the international border in Tombru, Bandarban.

The deceased and injured were all residents of the Zero Point Rohingya Camp, known as the camp closest to the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, on no-man's land.

The same day, a youth named Anganthowai Tanchangya was grievously injured in a landmine explosion along the border in Naikhongchhari. Due to the injuries, one of his legs had to be amputated.
