Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen had a virtual meeting with British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab on Monday to discuss various issues, including the Rohingya refugees and climate change.

The in-person meeting between Momen, now in the Netherlands, and Raab had been scheduled for September 2 in London. However, the meeting could not be held due to the British foreign secretary's travel abroad.

During their virtual meeting, Raab and Momen discussed the strong relationship between the UK and Bangladesh, according to a press release forwarded by the British High Commission in Dhaka.

Foreign Secretary Raab congratulated Bangladesh on its golden jubilee of independence and welcomed the last 50 years of UK-Bangladesh relations.

Raab reiterated the UK’s support for the action Bangladesh has taken on climate change in the run-up to COP26 and beyond, especially the country’s transition away from coal to clean and renewable energy. He pressed for Bangladesh to commit to a 2050 net zero target.

He conveyed the UK’s appreciation for Bangladesh for hosting the Rohingya refugees and reaffirmed the UK’s continued support to ensure dignified lives for the refugees in Bangladesh, enable the Rohingya to return home to Rakhine state, and maintain pressure on Myanmar.

The foreign secretary welcomed the inaugural UK-Bangladesh trade dialogue and discussed further opportunities for strengthening trade between the two countries.
