The Chinese embassy in Dhaka has apologised to the government for sending gifts to former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on August 15, the death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members.
Khaleda Zia used to celebrate her birthday on August 15, also a national mourning day. Awami League claims that Khaleda's birthday on August 15 is fake.
"We were unhappy about it. It should not have happened," a highly-placed source at the foreign ministry told Dhaka Tribune.
When asked if the Foreign Ministry raised the issue with the Chinese, the source said, "We did not have to. They stayed in touch with us on their own. The Chinese embassy in Dhaka has apologised for that."
It was done inadvertently, the source said quoting the Chinese embassy.
The embassy was doing this for a long time, therefore, they just followed the tradition, the source said quoting the explanation offered by the Chinese.
