Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated her Malaysian counterpart Muhyiddin Yassin on his assumption of office and conveyed him the fullest support of her government as well as Bangladeshi people.

In a letter sent to the Malaysian prime minister on Sunday, Sheikh Hasina also termed the confidence that Malaysian people reposed in him throughout his political career is exemplary.

A copy of the letter was obtained by the Dhaka Tribune.

Yassin, a Malay nationalist politician backed by the corruption-tarnished former ruling party, was sworn in as prime minister on Sunday, replacing 94-year-old Mahathir Mohamad.

The premier also thanked the Malaysian government for its support to the persecuted and forcible displaced Rohingyas, many of them currently accommodated at refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar.

“Bangladesh hopes that Malaysia would continue its political pressure on Myanmar to create a conducive environment in the Northern Rakhine state facilitating full repatriation of the Rohingyas at the earliest,” the letter reads.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government also vowed to work together with the Malaysian authorities in different fields and bolstering the bilateral ties between the two nations further.

The premier also invited Muhyiddin Yassin to visit Bangladesh during the Mujib Year, which marks the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The 100th birth anniversary of the architect of Bangladesh is on March 17. On this occasion, Bangladesh will celebrate Mujib Borsho (Mujib Year) from March 17, 2020, to March 26, 2021.
