The embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Dhaka has honoured Sufia Akter, a Bangladeshi caregiver who died saving two Emirati boys from drowning in 2014.
Sufia, who worked in the UAE as a nanny with an Emirati family, was swept away in the sea after she bravely rescued two Emirati boys in her care, aged between six and ten on October 24, 2014.
Sufia rescued the boys from the strong waves and managed to pull the children safely, reports UNB citing UAE Embassy.
UAE Ambassador to Bangladesh Saed Mohammed Al Mheiri handed over a medal, a certificate of honour and financial assistance to Sufia's family, given by the UAE government for the heroic sacrifices.
During the handing over ceremony the ambassador said: “We express our deepest gratitude for her sacrifice and UAE would always be with the bereaved family.”
Abdulla Ali Al Hmoudi, deputy head of mission of the embassy, was also present.
Earlier in 2016, under the directive of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice-president and prime minister of UAE, ruler of Dubai with support from UAE embassy in Bangladesh and Bangladesh embassy to UAE and UAE based Charity organisation Dubai Cares built a school in memory of Sufia's bravery at Bhata Para in Sunamgonj where Sufia was born and raised.
