South Africa has said it will carry out its diplomatic relations with Bangladesh from its mission in New Delhi starting on Sunday.
Robina P Marks, the South African high commissioner to Sri Lanka, concurrently accredited to Bangladesh, conveyed the decision when she made a farewell call on Foreign Minister Abdul Momen, at the latter's office on Monday.
They discussed the forthcoming Foreign Office Consultation scheduled for May. Both sides agreed to sustain their cooperation in different multilateral platforms, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
Momen said he was satisfied with the existing bilateral relations between Bangladesh and South Africa.
He also highlighted huge investment opportunities in various Bangladeshi sectors and suggested that a South African business delegation could visit the country to explore the trade and investment opportunities.
Marks said the Bangladesh-South Africa relationship is "warm, ancient, and pragmatic."
She appreciated the unprecedented humanitarian gesture of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to more than one million Rohingyas, forcibly displaced from their homeland in Myanmar.
The high commissioner said South Africa is considering the possibility of opening a consulate in Dhaka in near future.
