Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was conferred an honorary Doctor of Literature (DLitt) by the Kazi Nazrul Islam University of Asansol, at a special convocation held on May 26, 2018.
The Nazrul Academy of Churulia and Kazi Nazrul Islam University at Asansol in West Bengal jointly organized a week-long festival, where the doctorate was given.
Professor Sadhan Chakraborti, vice-chancellor of Kazi Nazrul Islam University, in his speech said: “The height of the personality of Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina is beyond our measure.”
In her 20-minute acceptance speech, Sheikh Hasina spoke on different aspects of Kazi Nazrul Islam’s literary and musical works. Expressing her deep admiration for the national poet, Sheikh Hasina shed light on how Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman adopted the slogan “Joy Bangla” from a poem by Nazrul.
The prime minister also recited from the poem ‘The Rebel’ and pointed out the poet’s role in kindling the spirit of liberation through his work.
The DLitt citation gives a snapshot of her personality and succinctly presents her admirable qualities. Ably stewarded by her, Bangladesh is well on the road to Bangabandhu’s Sonar Bangla.
