Rohingya repatriation: Physical arrangement agreement to be signed on Tuesday

Update : 16 Jan 2018, 01:58 AM
A physical arrangement agreement regarding the repatriation of the Rohingya refugees, who have headed across the border to Bangladesh after October 2016, is set to be signed on Tuesday. A foreign secretary-level meeting of the Joint Working Group (JWG) was held in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw on Monday. “We are almost done with the agreement. The final agreement will be ready by tomorrow morning,” said a Bangladeshi government official. The main features of the physical arrangement agreement include details of when the repatriation will be initiated, how long it will take to finish and how many Rohingya will be repatriated in each batch. Bangladesh Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and his Myanmar counterpart U Myint Thu are leading their respective sides in the JWG. Asked when the list of the Rohingya refugees will be handed over to the Myanmar government, a government official replied: “Bangladesh will hand over a list of some 100,000 Rohingya to Myanmar for scrutiny soon after the signing of the agreement.” Earlier on November 23, 2017, the two countries had signed a repatriation agreement in an effort to start sending back the Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh within two months. More than 650,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh after a sweeping Myanmar army offensive starting late August, 2017.The article was first published on banglatribune.com
