The Department of General Education (GED) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), in collaboration with MAATRA Gobeshona Songstha, organized an academic workshop and cultural performance titled Manipuri Culture: Society, Festivals and Performing Arts as part of its Introduction to Drama course.
The event was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Professor Shahnaj Husne Jahan, head of the Department of General Education. Students, faculty members from different departments and invited guests attended the programme.
The academic session was conducted by Manipuri researcher Sukanta Sinha, who spoke on the history, cultural heritage, social life, festivals, music, dance traditions and artistic legacy of the Manipuri community. The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment.
A highlight of the event was a live Pung (Manipuri drum) performance and a classical Manipuri dance recital by Arnab Sharma, adjunct faculty member of the Department of Dance at the University of Dhaka. His performance showcased the aesthetics, rhythm, spirituality and expressive traditions of Manipuri performing arts.
According to the organizers, the combination of academic discussion and live cultural performances provided students with an experiential learning opportunity while fostering a greater appreciation of Bangladesh’s cultural diversity and intangible cultural heritage.
ULAB and MAATRA Gobeshona Songstha said the initiative reflects their shared commitment to promoting indigenous knowledge, preserving cultural heritage, encouraging intercultural dialogue and enriching students’ learning through academic and cultural engagement.
