BNP candidates have won four of the five parliamentary seats in Gazipur, while Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami secured one in the 13th parliamentary election.
The results were announced by Gazipur Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Mohammad Alam Hossain early Thursday.
In Gazipur-1 (Kaliakoir and part of Gazipur City Corporation), BNP candidate Mujibur Rahman, contesting under the sheaf of paddy symbol, won 208,688 votes. His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Shah Alam Bakshi, received 149,553 votes.
In Gazipur-2 (Gazipur City Corporation), BNP candidate M Manjurul Karim Roni, son of former state minister for religious affairs Professor MA Mannan and general secretary of Gazipur Metropolitan BNP, secured 188,606 votes with the sheaf of paddy symbol. His closest rival, National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate Ali Naser Khan, contesting with the Shapla Koli (Water Lily Bud) symbol, received 140,950 votes.
In Gazipur-3 (three unions of Sripur upazila, Sadar upazila and part of the city), BNP’s Professor Dr SM Rafiqul Islam Bachchu, joint health affairs secretary of the party’s National Executive Committee, won 161,258 votes. His nearest rival, 11-party alliance candidate and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Central Shura member Mohammad Ehsanul Haque, who contested with the rickshaw symbol, received 99,354 votes. He won by the highest margin in the district, defeating his rival by 61,904 votes.
In Gazipur-4 (Kapasia), Jamaat-nominated candidate and former president of Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir, Saluddin Ayubi, contesting with the scale symbol, secured 101,779 votes. His nearest rival, BNP candidate Shah Riazul Hannan, received 90,390 votes.
In Gazipur-5 (Kaliganj upazila, Baria union of Sadar upazila and wards 40, 41 and 42 of Gazipur City Corporation), BNP candidate and former MP AKM Fazlul Haque Milon won 132,891 votes with the sheaf of paddy symbol. His nearest rival, Jamaat candidate Hasa, contesting with the scale symbol, received 76,776 votes.
