BNP candidates have secured victory in all six parliamentary constituencies in Barisal district.
District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Khairul Alam Sumon announced the results of the six seats around 3am on Friday.
In Barisal-1 (Gournadi-Agailjhara), BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapan, contesting with the paddy sheaf symbol, received 100,552 votes. His nearest rival, Kamrul Islam Khan of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (scale), secured 46,263 votes. Swapan won by a margin of 54,289 votes. In the referendum, 112,208 votes were cast in favour of “Yes” and 73,989 for “No”.
In Barisal-2 (Banaripara-Uzirpur), BNP central executive committee member Sardar Sarfuddin Ahmed Santu won with 141,622 votes. His closest competitor, Abdul Mannan (scale), received 74,082 votes. Santu’s winning margin was 67,540 votes. The constituency recorded 134,278 “Yes” votes and 80,966 “No” votes in the referendum.
In Barisal-3 (Babuganj-Muladi), BNP Vice-Chairman Zainul Abedin secured 80,930 votes, defeating Barrister Asaduzzaman Bhuiyan of the 11-party alliance (eagle), who received 61,192 votes. Abedin won by 18,738 votes. The referendum saw 122,305 “Yes” votes and 40,636 “No” votes.
In Barisal-4 (Hizla-Mehendiganj), Rajib Ahsan, central general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal and BNP nominee, secured 128,322 votes. His nearest rival, Md Abdul Jabbar (scale), received 74,684 votes. Ahsan won by 53,638 votes. The constituency recorded 143,900 “Yes” votes and 64,511 “No” votes.
In Barisal-5 (Sadar and City Corporation areas), BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Mujibur Rahman Sarwar secured 135,146 votes. His nearest rival, Mufti Faizul Karim of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (hand fan), received 95,044 votes. Sarwar won by 40,102 votes. The referendum tally showed 176,687 votes in favour of “Yes” and 69,394 for “No”.
In Barisal-6 (Bakerganj), district BNP convener Abul Hossain Khan received 82,217 votes, defeating Jamaat-e-Islami nominee Md Mahmudunnabi (scale), who secured 55,988 votes. Khan won by a margin of 26,229 votes. The constituency recorded 115,174 “Yes” votes and 41,700 “No” votes.
Expressing regret over the delay in announcing the results, Khairul Alam Sumon said it took time to prepare the final compilation after receiving results from all six constituencies.
“With the cooperation of all concerned, we were able to complete the election without any major untoward incidents. Voting was held in a fair and peaceful environment across all six constituencies,” he added.
