Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on Wednesday evening addressed the nation on the eve of the parliamentary election, urging citizens to go to polling centers fearlessly and exercise their right to vote. He also called on everyone to accept the results of the democratic process, whatever they may be.
Speaking ahead of Thursday’s polls, scheduled exactly one and a half years after the July Uprising, the CEC said, “[On Thursday], voting for one of the most important elections in our history will take place.
“At this historic moment, I pay my deepest respects to the martyrs of the Great Liberation War, and also remember those who fell in the July Uprising, whose blood has brought us to the threshold of democratic advancement. I pray for the forgiveness of their souls. I also pray for the swift recovery and normal life of the injured July activists.”
Nasir emphasized that voting is not only a citizen’s right but also a responsibility. “I hope you all conscientiously fulfil this duty. I call on political parties, candidates and voters to act responsibly to maintain a peaceful and harmonious environment. Difference of opinion is natural in a democracy. Remembering this, come to polling centers in a festive spirit, vote for your preferred candidate, and accept the result as part of the democratic process.”
The CEC also urged citizens to set aside personal inconvenience to help ensure a successful election. “Assist election officers, field magistrates and law enforcement in handling any unintended incidents. With our collective effort, we can witness a fair, beautiful, peaceful, and festive election. I end by once again urging your voluntary participation. May Almighty Allah guide us.”
Polling in 299 constituencies will run from 7:30am to 4:30pm on Thursday. Voting in Sherpur-3, postponed due to a candidate’s death, will be held later.
