The nomination paper of Mujibul Haque Chunnu, former Secretary General of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) and current executive chairman of the faction loyal to Anisul Islam Mahmud, has been declared invalid in the Kishoreganj-3 (Karimganj–Tarail) constituency. In addition, the nomination of independent candidate Jahangir Alam Molla, former vice-president of the district BNP, has also been cancelled.
The decisions were taken during the scrutiny of nomination papers held on Sunday from 10am to 1pm at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The scrutiny process was conducted by Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aslam Molla, Superintendent of Police SM Farhad Hossain, and District Election Officer Mohammad Morshed Alam.
On the same day, the candidacies of 15 candidates in Kishoreganj constituencies 1, 2, and 3 were cancelled. A total of 32 candidates had submitted nomination papers in these three constituencies. Over the past two days, nomination papers of 25 candidates across the district’s six constituencies have been cancelled.
According to sources at the District Returning Officer’s office, the nomination of Mujibul Haque Chunnu in Kishoreganj-3 was cancelled due to complications regarding the signature of Ruhul Amin Howlader—Secretary General of a faction of the Jatiya Party that currently supports him—as well as due to Chunnu being a loan defaulter. Mujibul Haque Chunnu is currently the Executive Chairman of the Anisul Islam Mahmud–led faction of the Jatiya Party.
Additionally, the nomination papers of BNP “rebel” candidate Jahangir Alam Molla and another independent candidate, AK M Alamgir, were cancelled because the information regarding the votes of 1% of their supporting voters was incorrect. In the same constituency, the nomination of Democratic Party candidate Dilwar Hossain Bhuiyan was cancelled due to complications with the signature of the party chief.
In this constituency, the nomination papers of six candidates were declared valid, including BNP candidate and former education minister Muhammad Osman Faruk, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Jehad Khan, and Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Md. Alamgir Hossain.
In Kishoreganj-1 (Sadar–Hossainpur) constituency, the nomination papers of six candidates—including three top district BNP leaders contesting as independents—were cancelled. However, the nomination papers of seven candidates were declared valid, including BNP candidate and District BNP General Secretary Mazharul Islam and Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Mosaddeq Bhuiyan. The nominations of former district BNP vice-president and former Dhaka Divisional Special Judge Md Rezaul Karim Khan, former district BNP vice-president Ruhul Hossain, and former senior joint general secretary of the district BNP Khaled Saifullah Sohel were cancelled due to incorrect information regarding the votes of 1% of their supporting voters.
In Kishoreganj-2 (Pakundia–Katiadi) constituency, the nomination papers of four candidates were declared valid, including BNP candidate and lawyer Jalal Uddin and Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Shafiqul Islam. However, the nomination papers of five candidates, including Shafiqul Islam of Gono Odhikar Parishad, were cancelled.
Regarding the matter, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aslam Molla said that nomination papers of a total of 61 candidates across Kishoreganj’s six constituencies were scrutinized on Saturday and Sunday. Due to various irregularities and errors, the nomination papers of 25 candidates were declared invalid.
