The Bangladesh Republican Party (BRP) has received official registration as a new political party, with "Elephant" designated as its party symbol.
On Sunday, the Election Commission (EC) handed over the registration certificate to BRP Chairman KM Abu Hanif Hridoy.
In a notification signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, it was stated that following a High Court division order on July 23 through a writ petition in the Supreme Court, the EC has registered the Bangladesh Republican Party as a political party under the Representation of the People Order (RPO) until further orders.
The "Elephant" has been reserved as the party’s symbol, and the party’s registration number is 57.
Chairman KM Abu Hanif Hridoy said: “Democracy has triumphed. I have received justice.”
With this, the total number of registered political parties rises to 53, excluding the suspended registration of the Awami League.
The registration system for political parties was introduced in 2008, before the ninth parliamentary election.
Although 57 parties have been registered with the EC so far, five—including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami—had their registrations canceled by court orders. Recently, Jamaat-e-Islami regained its registration following a court ruling.
