The Election Commission has reinstated the registration of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami along with its party symbol, following a verdict by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
The announcement came in a gazette signed by Election Commission Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Tuesday.
The 2018 gazette notification that had cancelled the party’s registration has been revoked.
According to the latest gazette: “As per Article 90B of the Representation of the People Order, 1972, the Election Commission registered the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Registration No 014) on November 5, 2008. Subsequently, based on the verdict in Writ Petition No 630 of 2009, the party’s registration was cancelled through a gazette issued on October 28, 2018.
“In the case of Civil Appeal No 139 of 2013 with Civil Petition for Leave to Appeal No 3112 of 2013, the Appellate Division overturned the High Court verdict and ordered the restoration of Jamaat’s registration.”
In light of this, the commission stated: “The gazette notification issued on October 28, 2018, cancelling the registration, is hereby revoked, and the registration of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including its party symbol, is reinstated.”
