The Election Commission issued a show-cause notice on Monday night to Nizamuddin Kaiser, independent candidate of Comilla City Corporation election.

It is mentioned in the notice that on Monday afternoon, he held a procession on the streets of Race Course Junction and Railway Flyover area.

As per Rule 11(2) of the City Corporation (Conduct of Election) Rules, 2016, no contesting candidate can hold any sort of rally or show-down during the pre-election period.

This is a clear violation of that rule. A response is requested within the next 48 hours as to why legal action will not be taken for this action.

Confirming the show cause notice, Regional Election Officer and Comilla City Corporation Election Returning Officer Farhad Hossain said that the Election Commission has kept all the candidates under observation. In case of irregularities, action will be taken.

In the third election of the city corporation in 2022, Arfanul Haque Rifat of the “boat” symbol was elected as the mayor. He died undergoing treatment on December 13, 2023. Votes will be taken in 640 booths of 105 polling stations in the city corporation for the mayoral post.

The election will be held on March 9 by EVM. This time there are 242,458 voters.
