  • Need for reforms in electoral system
  • Urged to resolve crisis
Update : 18 Jan 2024, 07:16 PM

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said that the people's confidence in the electoral system has decreased.

He said this at an event held at the auditorium of the Election Commission in Dhaka on Thursday.

The CEC said: “Without the help of the government, it is not possible to make such a big campaign successful.”

According to him, the nation has emerged from anxiety and crisis. But it is not a permanent solution. If the politicians do not have confidence, then the Election Commission does not get acceptance. If there is a crisis every five years due to elections, then the development of the country will also be hindered. Political leadership will also need to find a way to deal with elections.

If it is possible to bring reforms in the election system, he believed that the elections will be more acceptable in the future.

He urged to resolve the crisis of this type of system to keep the next commission free from controversy even after their term has expired.

The chief election commissioner said: “The election was not very participatory. A large group not only boycotted, but wanted to resist. The nation is relieved by the election, we are relieved.”

Election Commissioner Md Ahsan Habib Khan said: “We have succeeded by working with faith. We could not go down from the standard we have reached. We will show how this commission works, which will be exemplary for the future.”

Election Commissioner Rasheda Sultana said: “We wanted to have a good election. Our government has given support. Otherwise, it would not be possible to work seamlessly.”

Election Commissioner Md Alamgir said: “The parties who participated and the government, all cooperated wholeheartedly. Everyone from Ansar helped. Without the government’s support, we could not have conducted the elections fairly. Elections would have been more acceptable if all parties had participated.”

Election Commissioner Md Anisur Rahman said: "We were firm that if we cannot hold free, fair and peaceful elections, we will take a decision."

Regarding the rate of vote counting, he said: "If the last briefing was done at 3:30pm, then there would not have been any confusion about the information."
