Jamalpur-5: Awami League election camp comes under attack, 6 injured

The election camp of the Awami League candidate of  Jamalpur-5 constituency was reportedly vandalized in an attack in Shahbazpur union of Sadar upazila on Wednesday. 

Six followers of the Awami League candidate were injured in the attack.  Among them, the condition of four followers was critical and they were taken to Jamalpur General Hospital. 

The incident took place at a place adjacent to the South Kaidola Haque Dakhil Madrasa of the union around 1.30pm.

The Awami League supporters claimed that the attackers were followers of an independent candidate. 

The seriously injured people are UP member Niamat Ali, 70, president of Awami League of ward no 6, his son Md Zakir Hossain, 40, a Jubo League leader, Masud Rana, 27 and Maruf Hossain, 22. 

Witnesses claimed that after completing the election campaign when the supporters of Awami League candidate came to their camp, a group of miscreants numbering 10-12 attacked the camp and carried out vandalism. 

As they (Awami League supporters) tried to obstruct them, the attackers beat them, said Hriday Akand Chamak, joint general secretary of Jamalpur District Chhatra League and member of the coordination team of Shahbazpur Union.

Regarding the attack, Abul Kalam Azad, candidate for the Boat symbol, said that those who carried out the attack should be prosecuted. 

He also demanded to bring those who ordered the attack under the law. 

Rezaul Karim Reznu, the independent candidate, could not be reached over phone. Ikramul Haque Nobin, the representative of his election management committee, said that no one has the courage to vandalize the campaign camp of the Boat symbol.

They are creating chaos among themselves and blaming it on the supporters of the candidate with the Eagle symbol, the representative added.

Muhammad Mohabbat Kabir, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jamalpur Sadar police station, said that the police went to the scene of the Shahbazpur incident. 

Complaints will be investigated and necessary action will be taken, he added.

Earlier, Independent candidate for Jamalpur-4 Dr Murad Hasan claimed that 10 of his supporters were injured while his election camp was vandalized by Awami League leaders and activists in Jamalpur.

The incident took place at Tariapara in Sarishabari upazila on Monday night.

According to police and local sources, Dr Murad Hasan, an independent candidate, recently set up an election camp in Tariapara area. 

On Monday night, around 8:45pm, his supporters were heading to the camp. Upon their arrival, they were allegedly attacked by Awami League activists with sticks and local weapons.
