Three people, including a Jubo League leader, were injured allegedly when supporters of incumbent MP Sanowar Hossain opened fire during a procession held for Awami League in Tangail-5 constituency.

The incident took place at Baghil union of the Sadar upazila at around 11pm on Sunday.

The injured were identified as Rokonuzzaman Rokon, general secretary of Baghil union unit Juba League, activists Siam and Rokon Mia.

They are being treated at the Sheikh Hasina Medical College Hospital in Tangail.

According to party sources, Rokonuzzaman Rokon’s condition is critical.

Md Mamun-ur-Rashid, the Awami League candidate for Tangail-5 constituency, said his supporters brought out a procession in Baghil on Sunday night. At that time, the supporters of the current MP Sanowar Hossain (Eagle) opened fire on the procession.

Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tangail Sadar police station, visited the spot and detained two activists of the Eagle symbol.

Police also recovered two bullet casings from the spot.

Earlier, a supporter of an independent aspirant from the Madaripur-3 constituency was stabbed and beaten to death in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur on Saturday, allegedly by the followers of the ruling Awami League candidate.

This is the second murder since the campaigns for the polls began on December 18. It also occurred amid continued breaches of the electoral code of conduct and sporadic violence over the January 7 general polls.

Eskandar Khan, 40, was a ward-level leader of the Awami League and a supporter of independent candidate Tahmina Siddique, who is vying with the “Eagle” symbol.
