Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu, also the party’s candidate for Jhalakathi 2 constituency, on Friday, gave his explanation to the Election Commission for allegedly breaching the electoral code of conduct.
Amu gave his explanation to the Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal and other commissioners.
He entered the Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka’s Agargaon area at 3pm and stayed there for half an hour.
After the meeting, Amir Hossain Amu refused to make any comment to the journalists.
Election Commission Secretary Jahangir Alam said that Amu came to the Election Commission and defended himself.
Earlier on December 9, the commission instructed Amu to present his explanation in person on December 15.
The Election Commission's action comes in response to a violation where speakers allegedly sought votes for Amu during a program in Jhalakathi on December 8.
According to the Election Commission's letter, this act is in breach of the directive issued on November 16, which stated that no one would be allowed to participate in the election campaign until December 18, the day when the EC is scheduled to allocate electoral symbols.
The 12th national polls are slated to be held on January 7.
