EC orders cancellation of Ganatantri Party candidate nominations

  • A member of the 14-party alliance
  • Currently divided into two separate committees
Update : 13 Dec 2023, 09:33 AM

The Election Commission (EC) has ordered the cancellation of the candidature of all the candidates of the Ganatantri Party.
The returning officers were instructed to cancel all the nominations filed for the nomination of that party as there was no approved committee of the party.

According to the letter signed by EC Deputy Secretary Mahbub Alam Shah, the commission will not approve the separate submissions of the president and general secretary of the political party registered with the Election Commission. Hence no committee of the Ganatantri Party exists.

The Ganatantri Party, a member of the 14-party alliance, is currently divided into two. Two groups of the party submitted separate committees to the EC. 12 candidates of two groups submitted their nominations in the election. Almost all of them are valid candidates.

Awami League, the alliance leader, has given approval to the EC that the candidates of the Ganatantri Party can use the boat symbol like other partners of the 14-party alliance.

Due to internal conflict, former committee president Arsh Ali and general secretary Shahadat Hossain split and formed two separate committees of the Ganatantri Party.
