The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday served show-cause notices to the Awami League candidate for the Narayanganj-4 constituency, Shamim Osman, and the Jatiya Party (JaPa) candidate for Narayanganj-3, Liakat Hossain Khoka, for violating the electoral code of conduct ahead of the January 7 polls.
Joint District and Session Judge Kazi Yasin Habib issued the notice and asked Shamim Osman to explain his position in person or send a representative to the court at 11am on Sunday.
The notice stated: "A procession and a street rally were organized in the Talla area of Narayanganj on Friday in support of Shamim Osman while carrying festoons of the Boat symbol and musical instruments, obstructing the movement of transports and pedestrians. Such actions are clear violations of the election code of conduct."
Meanwhile, Mohsina Islam, the chief of the inquiry committee of the EC and also a senior assistant judge of Sonargaon Court, served the other notice to the JaPa candidate for bringing with him a crowd of supporters to the returning officer’s chamber on Friday.
The JaPa candidate could not be reached for comment, but his personal secretary, Mahbubur Rahman Kalam, said that they would respond to the notice in due time.
Ruling party lawmaker Shamim Osman could not be reached for his comment either.
