The Commonwealth of Nations is expected to send a pre-election assessment mission to Bangladesh, which would be in the country from November 19-23, ahead of the 12th national parliamentary election.

The Commonwealth reportedly expressed its desire to send the mission to Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal via email.

Hopefully, they will also come to observe the election, media reports quoted Awal as saying.

The Commonwealth wrote to the CEC in the last week of October, and he sent a response two days ago with his thanks and welcome.

He said: "After monitoring the situation of the pre-assessment team, we expect a team to arrive during the polls."

Earlier, the Election Commission invited applications from interested international observers and media by November 21 to monitor the polls.

The European Union had also sent a pre-election mission, deciding not to send a full observer mission.

Later, the EU said it would send a four-member observer team to monitor the polls.
