The Election Commission (EC) has finalized 42 electoral symbols for the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) elections, covering the posts of chairman, general member and reserved women member.
The symbols were published in a gazette issued on September 17, a copy of which was shared with the media yesterday.
According to the gazette, titled “Union Parishad Election Rules, 2026”, and signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, 20 symbols have been finalized for chairman candidates, 12 for general member candidates and 10 for reserved women member candidates.
The symbols for chairman candidates are computer, bananas, bell, horse, shrimp, jug, table, table clock, telephone, building, double-decker bus, turban, baby taxi, peacock, mobile phone, motorcycle, stool, railway engine, sofa and duck.
The symbols for reserved women member candidates are wardrobe, water pitcher, dressing table, palanquin, fruit basket, microphone, sewing machine, sunflower, deer and helicopter.
The symbols for general member candidates are camel, cup and saucer, kite, ship, torchlight, tube well, tractor, lock, football, electric fan, electric bulb and rooster.
The EC had earlier ruled out local government elections this year, saying it would not hold local body polls in November and December.
It said it plans to hold the upcoming UP elections on a non-partisan basis, meaning political party symbols will not be used.
Previously, UP chairman elections were conducted using party symbols. Following amendments to the relevant law, party symbols have been removed from the election rules.
