Crackdown on illegal arms trade intensifies as elections approach

As the elections approach, law enforcement agencies have intensified their efforts to recover illegal weapons. 

Detectives have received crucial information regarding individuals engaged in the illicit arms trade, smuggling weapons across the country, and even those involved in illegal activities with legal firearms.

Intelligence sources have revealed that while investigating recent operations resulting in the recovery of weapons, detectives have acquired information about the entry of weapons through border areas. 

The ongoing effort involves identifying those responsible for the weapons' infiltration. 

The law enforcement officers maintaining strict surveillance, following explicit directives, to curb the inflow of arms across the country's borders.

On Sunday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested four individuals in possession of illegal weapons. The operation led to the recovery of two weapons, along with 13 rounds of ammunition and a private car. 

The arrested individuals provided significant information about their affiliation with a larger criminal network. 

Operating under the alias Ahmadullah, also known as Subel, this group facilitated the illegal transport of weapons from the border to Dhaka. 

Detectives have gathered intelligence about the distribution of illegal weapons across the border to various individuals in different parts of the country, including the capital. 

As of now, Subel remains at large, and efforts are underway to apprehend him.

During initial interrogations, the arrested individuals informed the police that Subel was responsible for delivering weapons to them from the border area. 

Subsequently, they distributed these weapons to various locations, including Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj. 

The arrest of Subel is expected to yield crucial information on how illegal weapons are entering the country and the individuals or groups facilitating their distribution. The police have confirmed that operations are actively ongoing to detain Subel.

Intelligence agencies are closely monitoring these activities in light of the impending elections. 

Investigations are focused on identifying the buyers of these weapons, as well as determining any other individuals connected to these illegal arms dealers, with the goal of bringing them to justice.

Detective Branch (DB) of police chief Additional Commissioner Harun Or Rashid said that intelligence officers are committed to identifying and prosecuting those who seek to destabilize the country or engage in illegal arms trafficking in the lead-up to the elections. 

“The DMP has established eight illegal arms recovery teams, each operating within its respective division, promptly acting on gathered intelligence. The extensive monitoring extends beyond the capital city to its surrounding areas,” he added.

Emphasizing that all parties involved in buying or selling illegal weapons are considered equal criminals, he assured that those implicated will face legal consequences. 

“Additionally, reports have emerged about individuals using legal weapons to threaten and intimidate others. The police are determined to ensure that all such individuals are held accountable under the law,” he added.
