Nazrul Islam Babul, the Jatiya Party (JaPa) mayoral candidate, announced his rejection of the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election outcome on Wednesday, alleging bias and misconduct in the polling process.
The entire process was a farce orchestrated by the election commission, Babul claimed.
Earlier in the day, Babul cast his vote at the Anandaniketan School centre. He then reported that agents representing the plough symbol had been dismissed from multiple polling centres.
However, he failed to specify which centres had dismissed his agents.
Babul's dismissal of the election results was later confirmed by Sylhet Metropolitan JaPa Member Secretary Abdus Shahid Lashkar Bashir.
He revealed that Babul had intended to publicly reject the results at a press conference, but ill health had prevented him.
Bashir further commented: "We will soon take legal action on this matter and lodge complaints wherever required."
The Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury unofficially won in the Sylhet City Corporation elections.
Anwaruzzaman received 118,614 votes while his nearest rival candidate Nazrul Islam Babul of plough symbol got 51,321.
Voters exercised their franchise through EVMs at 190 centres in Sylhet from 8am to 4pm.
