CEC: Commission satisfied with the Rajshahi, Sylhet city polls

A 50% voter turnout on average is considered good enough, says Habibul Awal

Update : 21 Jun 2023, 08:11 PM

In the aftermath of the Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporation elections, which concluded peacefully and smoothly, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal expressed his satisfaction.

“We are pleased. There have been no untoward incidents. Voters have been able to cast their votes freely and without interruption. We have not heard of, nor have we received information about, any obstructions. Therefore, today's elections have been good overall,” he said while speaking to journalists in a post-vote briefing on Wednesday.

The CEC went on to share that he and the election commissioners had been monitoring the voting process throughout the day via CCTV cameras.

“The election proceeded quite beautifully, unhindered, and in a festive environment. There were some heavy showers in Rajshahi for a while,” he said.

"Based on the information we have collated, the voter turnout in Rajshahi was between 52-55%, while in Sylhet it was approximately 46%. These figures might see slight adjustments, either up or down, when the final count is in. As anticipated, the Basail municipality election proceeded smoothly as well, witnessing a voting rate of approximately 70%," shared Kazi Habibul Awal.

The chief election commissioner further explained: "In such elections, a 50% voter turnout is considered good enough. A turnout of 60-70% would be excellent. We will strive to achieve this. We hope for your support as well. With the Sylhet and Rajshahi votes, we have now completed elections in five cities under the current commission, ahead of the national elections."

Regarding an overall assessment of the city elections, the CEC noted: "During our tenure, especially the critical elections of the five city corporations, they have all seen successful elections. We believe this will inspire voters in the national parliamentary elections. They will be excited about voting, and it could become a festive occasion. They will be eager to go to the polling centres. This is a positive aspect. We will see what the future holds. We are optimistic.
