The Jatiya Party's Nazrul Islam Babul, who is running for mayor in Wednesday's Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election, has alleged that his agents are booted out of polling stations.
He made the claim while talking to journalists after casting his vote at the Anandaniketon School polling centre in the morning.
Replying to a question, the JaPa candidate said his agents also received threats on Tuesday night to abstain from voting.
Expressing concern about the situation, he said he will make comments on the overall situation after voting ends.
Meanwhile, Awami League-backed Anwaruzzaman Choudhury cast his vote at the Jamea Islamia Patantula centre at 9am.
Anwaruzzaman said: “Polling has started properly. I cast my vote too. Voter turnout is remarkable. We were afraid of rain, but now there is also no fear of rain. The sky is very clear. I hope I will win.”
Voters started exercising their franchise at 8am through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 190 centres in Sylhet.
The other mayoral candidates are the Jatiya Party's Nazrul Islam Babul and Zaker Party's Zahirul Alam, while Abdul Hanif Kutu, Salah Uddin Rimon and Shah Jahan Mia are the independent candidates.
The Islami Andolan's Hafiz Maulana Mahmudul Hasan has boycotted the election.
This time the total number of voters is 487,753. Among them, 254,360 are male voters and 233,387 female voters.
